"I am just writing to let you know how much of a positive impact the egg-hatching experience had on all members of Madley Brook School. During the 10 days, children produced a wide range of work across the school relating to the experience, from artwork to chick diaries, a class assembly with drama, songs and facts about life cycles, formal letters of thanks from some of the older pupils to me for arranging it, a funeral for the duckling who didn't make it....the list goes on. And the empathy, care, excitement, sadness, wonder and awe were just a few of the emotions we witnessed. But it did not only effect the pupils. Staff across the school were in and out of each other's classrooms. Family members of staff and children came in especially to see the ducklings and chicks after school to see what all the fuss was about, and we even had a few moments in an evening meeting where five of our Governors were sitting around the table each holding a duckling! Special thanks must go to Simon who delivered the eggs and collected the hatchlings and equipment. He was very informative, explaining and demonstrating what needed to be done, The feedback from everyone in our school community has been so positive. I have already had requests from children, staff and parents to repeat this experience again. Thank you once again for providing such an amazing package. We were amazed at how quickly they grew and they helped the children to learn in many areas of the curriculum; mainly in the Year 5 ‘Life Cycles’ theme, but we also wrote stories about a duckling egg that hatched in an unusual place, we weighed them each day and in numeracy lessons, calculated how much they had grown and also drew graphs to show their weight. "We recently had the pleasure of looking after 5 duckling eggs, watched them hatch and grow in to the cutest little bundles of fluff. The children thought it a lot of fun as they waddled in the water and ran around. "What an amazing experience we had, watching six beautiful little chicks hatch out of their eggs. The eggs arrived with us three days before their hatching date, which was perfect for our little ones. We didn't have to wait too long but had time to study the eggs, and hear the chicks cheeping inside the eggs, before the tapping began! The children then enjoyed looking after the chicks, feeding them, cleaning them out and giving them lots of gentle cuddles throughout their stay. Lots of talking and learning took place, and it is definitely an experience we will repeat with other groups of children."

We named the ducklings Rosie, Luke, Fluffy, Duck, Scruffy and Rocky. We have learnt to care for the ducklings as they have grown and changed rapidly. We have helped to teach the ducklings to eat, drink, swim and follow the leader! Each day we topped up their food and water, and every other day we cleaned out their brooder. “We really enjoyed looking after our chicks. The whole project was really easy to set up and everything we needed was provided in the kit box. It was amazing for our year 7s to see the moving embryo inside the egg when they used the candling lamp. They helped to film the hatching and were really amazed by the development of the chicks after they hatched. We monitored how quickly they grew and researched the appearance of the adults for each breed that hatched.
